Price Per Lot: $3.00
Lots Available: 16
Style No. (bin): F678 (axa~y)

Style no.: F678
Beads per lot: 50
Cost per bead: 6 cents
Bead material: Glass
Country of origin: China
Size/shape: 6mm (thick) x 8mm (wide) faceted rondelles with the hole through the center.  Rondelles are round beads which are wider than they are long.
Colors/description: Opaque orange with a lighter orange around the holes.  (I don't know why the beads have a lighter orange around the holes.)
Hole size: 1mm or a little larger (estimated).
Defects: The facets on these Chinese beads are more perfect than the facets on the Czech beads I usually carry.  The facets are smoother and shinier, and they have sharp edges, similar to Preciosa or Swarovski beads.  However, I've noticed that some beads do have one or two imperfect facets.  Since the edges between the facets are very sharp, they are more prone to being chipped than the facets on Czech beads (on the other hand, the sharp edges make the beads look finer and more expensive).  Perhaps one out of 100 beads will have very badly chipped facets, and I discard those beads if and when I see them.  In addition, I've noticed that the holes are slightly off-center, which doesn't happen with Czech beads.  (See Comments below.)  Altogether, only a small number of the beads (perhaps 3%?) have serious defects, and I consider that level of defects to be acceptable.  Although these beads have defects that can be discerned when examined closely, to the casual observer they appear more perfect than the faceted Czech beads I normally carry.
How photographed: Under two daylight-balanced lamps.  Note:  Using lamps leaves two bright spots on each bead -- especially on round beads -- but that can't be helped.  Also, the close-up shot may show defects that the human eye can't discern.
Comments: First, it's important that you read Defects above.  The fact that the holes in the beads are slightly off-center makes me wonder if the holes are drilled, which would be very strange since the holes of glass beads are usually formed by the mold.  The slightly off-center holes prevent the beads from sitting perfectly evenly, but the unevenness is slight.  In most of your designs, I think you'll be very satisfied by the appearance of these beads.

China is an emerging player in the world of glass beads, and many of the beads they make are very nice.  Up until now, the Czech Republic was the premier producer of glass beads in the world, with Italy (Moreno beads), Austria (Swarovski beads) and India being the other players.  The possibility exists that China will eventually supplant the Czech Republic as the premier source of glass beads.  That would be a shame.  However, we can expect to see a lot of new and interesting designs coming out of China, which will be exciting.
