Colors/description:

These are "chameleon" beads:  In artificial light at night, they are maroon red, but in daylight they are much lighter (similar to the picture).

Defects:

The beads appear to be in good shape.

How photographed:

At the window in natural daylight.

Comments:

Since I take my pictures in natural daylight, these beads came out looking light instead of dark.  The transformation between daylight and artificial light is quite remarkable.
